I began my career in astronomy as an assistant to a planetarium lecturer. Giving back to the community is a part of who I am.
Spectroscopy from citizen scientists
AVSpec is the first database for amateur spectroscopic observations from the American Association of Variable Star Observers. Accessible to any astronomer with the capability to perform spectroscopy, AVSpec is the world-leading database for amateur spectroscopy of variable stars and novae.
I was the Development Director of AVSpec from 2016–2018, developing the concept, backend, and frontend of the database. I was supported in this role by the Margaret Mayall Fellowship.
Astronomy on Tap! Copenhagen
Astronomy on Tap – Copenhagen is a monthly event held at Huset, organised by astronomers in Copenhagen. Each event has a theme and features two astronomy talks as well as a quiz and awesome space music! Talks are in English.
I helped co-found the Copenhagen chapter in 2019 with a band of other early career researchers.
University of St Andrews Astronomical Society
The University of St Andrews Astronomical Society (AstroSoc) was established in 1972 and has grown into one of the largest student-led astronomical societies worldwide, consisting of over 200 paid members annually. We are affiliated with Astronomers without Borders.
I re-organized the society as President in 2015 with an updated website, branding, and advertisement schemes. I also served twice as observing director.
Science Writing
Science needs to be communicated. Throughout my career, I have set aside time to write articles and serve as a peer editor. Highlights include Astrobites (2019–2021, articles), SciNote (2013–2014), and Heavens Above! (2013–2014).
Observatory Stewardship
Crisp evening air. Clear skies. Maybe a telescope. Nothing refreshes me more than a night under the stars.
Since 2008, I have volunteered 1000+ hours at observatories (and one planetarium) on two continents. Roles have included program director, telescope operator, and constellation guide.
